Career Explorations: Internship - Work Study - Applied Skills Programs
The Chesterton High School Internship - Work Study - Adaptive Career Connection Program offers rising seniors and special education students career-related experiences and opportunities outside the classroom in professional and general work settings. Internship and Work Study students can also earn 1 student success dual credit through Ivy Tech.
Placement & Program Information:
- Internship Program: Internships provide students with professional experiential opportunities that can spark curiosity, develop skills, and offer insight into potential career fields. Interns are matched with local businesses based on individual interests and participate for the duration of the academic year.
- Work Study Program: Work Study placements allow students to prepare for employment after high school by gaining experience in entry-level jobs within our community. Work Study students develop workplace skills while maintaining employment relative to their enrolled credits.
- Applied Skills Program: Our Applied skills adaptive work students enter this program at age 18 and participate until they reach the age of 22. This program provides students with workforce skills in a variety of settings that can be utilized beyond graduation. Depending upon their class schedules students will attend the business either on a Monday & Wednesday or Tuesday & Thursday schedule from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m.!
Who: Chesterton High School students that meet the following criteria are encouraged to enroll in this program.
- Students in good standing academically and behaviorally
- Students with above average attendance in all classes
- Students that have appropriate time available to meet the time commitment for participation
- Students Age 17 years old and older
Time Commitments: (Internships, Work Studys) CHS follows a block schedule with alternating Maroon and Gold days, each day consisting of four 90-minute blocks. Internships and Work Study placements require between 4.5 to 12.5 hours per week, depending on the total number of credits the student is enrolled. (Example 1 Block = 4.5 hours per week on average, this also depends on Maroon or Gold weeks - this will be explained prior to the start of the semester).
Timesheets & Evaluations (Internships & Work Study Students): Students must submit weekly timesheets signed by a supervisor, manager, or owner to verify attendance and hours worked. At the end of each semester, placement hosts will provide written evaluations as an assessment of student performance which is calculated into the final grade for the semester.
Classroom Instruction: In addition to their field experience, students are required to attend scheduled classroom instruction for guidance, professional development, and progress monitoring.
